Look at a birth chart and the lines crossing the centre are usually the most intimidating part. They look decorative. They are actually the chart’s most information-dense layer, and the underlying idea is simpler than the tangle suggests.
What an aspect actually is
An aspect is the angular distance between two planets on the chart wheel, measured in degrees around the 360-degree circle.
Certain angles are considered significant — not because of anything mystical about the number, but because the tradition has built an interpretive meaning around each one over centuries of use. When two planets sit at one of these angles, they are read as being in relationship: reinforcing each other, or creating friction.
The five to know
Conjunction (0°) — two planets essentially on top of each other. Read as a blending, where both planets’ energies merge into one intensified expression.
Sextile (60°) — an easy, supportive angle. Read as opportunity that requires a bit of effort to use.
Square (90°) — tension. Read as friction between the two planets’ agendas, and frequently described as the most productive kind of difficulty, since square aspects are associated with drive and growth through challenge.
Trine (120°) — the most harmonious angle. Read as talents that come naturally, sometimes so naturally they go undeveloped.
Opposition (180°) — directly across the wheel. Read as a pull between two competing needs that has to be balanced rather than resolved outright.
Why difficult aspects aren’t treated as bad
This surprises newcomers. Squares and oppositions are not read as misfortune in contemporary practice — if anything, they are treated as more interesting than easy aspects.
The reasoning follows a fairly intuitive logic: trines describe ease, and ease does not require you to develop anything. Squares describe friction, and friction is where effort gets applied and skill gets built. Charts with only easy aspects are sometimes described as pleasant and a little inert.

Do not try to read every aspect in a chart at once — a full chart can easily contain a dozen or more, and reading them all simultaneously is overwhelming even for people with years of practice.

One aspect at a time, starting from the placements you already know, is how this actually becomes readable rather than overwhelming.
